Poke delicacies have been on the rise in South Florida—from The Poke House and Raw Poke Bar in Fort Lauderdale to concepts like Poke 305 and PokeBao in Miami. But now, it’s Boca’s time to shine.
The Poke Company, which recently opened in Boca Raton on North Federal Highway, is a Hawaiian fast-casual restaurant that makes eating as easy as three simple steps. First, pick a size. Next, choose a base. Finally, select a protein.
It’s all about simple, quality poke, said co-owner Seth Shaning.
"We know what really works and what people really want on their poke. No extraneous toppings and mix-ins,” he said.
Shaning brings with him 10 years of experience as a manager with the Nobu restaurant group, which focuses on upscale Japanese cuisine, and also worked on a poke project in New York City. He helped open The Poke Company in Boca alongside cousin and co-owner Maximo Cortese.
As easy as the owners want that three-step process to be, making a decision may not be so simple when there are so many possibilities available.
Bases include white or brown rice, baby kale or cauliflower rice, as well as the option to mix and match. Protein choices are ahi tuna, Scottish salmon, spicy tuna, steamed shrimp and tofu. For an extra fee, patrons can also include avocado, masago (fish roe), seaweed salad, krab salad (that means the crab meat is imitation) or another fish topping. There’s also a variety of complimentary vegetables, sauces and toppings to garnish each bowl.
For the indecisive, The Poke Company offers five pre-made bowls, from the “Too Much Tuna” featuring two different types of tuna and the vegetarian “The Veggie Move” to “The Hot One,” which is packed with salmon, jalapeño, spicy mayo and cilantro.
Seaweed salad, krab salad and bubble tea will also be available. Flavors of the popular Asian drink include Thai, taro, matcha and coconut.
Shaning added service at the restaurant will be as key as the menu items.
"Our team is just as important as our food," he said. "We want the energy of the experience here to be smooth and positive."
The Poke Company is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
