Turns Out Delray’s Fat Rooster Has The Best Chicken Sandwich In The Country
June 18, 2015 — There are a lot of great chicken sandwiches out there, but according to industry website Restaurant Hospitality, the best one in the country can be found right here in Delray Beach.
The Hen Loving Waffle at Gary Rack’s Fat Rooster was named the best chicken sandwich of 2015, beating out competition from restaurants in cities such as Los Angeles and Cleveland.
Served between two sweet potato waffles, Southern-style chicken thighs are topped with whiskey watermelon (pickled watermelon, macerated in charred jalapeno-infused whiskey) and a sorghum, peanut and benne seed slaw. It costs $16 and was created by Matthew Danaher, culinary director for Gary Rack Restaurant Management Group.
Restaurant manager Ronnie Massey said that while he was confident the sandwich would rank highly, he didn’t know it would take the top spot.
“We’re very pleased that we are the number one,” he said.
Massey has a lot of confidence in his sandwiches, and he has a lot of confidence in the Fat Rooster.
“I’d like to think it’s the up and coming best restaurant on the block,” he said.
For the contest, Restaurant Hospitality evaluated sandwich entries from restaurants across the country and then narrowed down the list of contenders before doing a taste test. Other categories in the Best Sandwiches in America contest included best grilled cheese, best wrap and best panini.
