Boca Raton's Tanjore Offers Contemporary And Classic Indian Dishes

Indian cuisine is often misperceived, but Tanjore owner Christopher Corda is changing that way of thinking in South Florida. He earned his first Michelin star for an Indian concept in New York and he’s since opened similar restaurants in Orlando and Tampa, arriving in Boca Raton last spring to open Tanjore at Royal Palm Place.

One of the most common misconceptions about Indian food is the idea that curry is a spice, says Corda, who attributes that thinking to Thai food. “In true nature, curry is actually a blend of spices that can be customized for different heat levels,” he says. “We have seen people now understanding and enjoying Indian food.”

Originally from Bombay, India, Corda’s culinary journey through his native country inspired him to incorporate dishes from various regions into Tanjore’s menu, with the southeastern region being his favorite.

What’s for dinner?

Guests can go traditional with curries and butter chicken, but it’s the seafood influence like scallops, halibut and lobster, along with Tanjore’s French techniques that turn classic Indian dishes into eclectic ones. For example, Tanjore’s Pastooni Lobster Masala comes plated with a lobster tail, shiitake mushrooms and turmeric in a tomato butter sauce.

A must-order is the fluffy mushroom truffle naan (similar to a flatbread), and if you managed some self-control, move on to starters like the Lasuni Gobi, crispy cauliflower bites tossed in a tangy garlic and tomato sauce. Roti Pe Boti might resemble the soft tacos we’re familiar with, but instead of the ground beef and pico de gallo we’re used to, find pounded lamb seasoned with saffron and Kashmiri chilies.

The Noorani Branzino comes out whole and is filleted tableside, or opt for the Patiala Ghosh, tender pieces of lamb mixed with caramelized onions, black cardamom, whole roasted gram masala and hung yogurt. Vegetarians and vegans will happily find plates that match their palates as well.

Leave room for dessert and indulge in a few classics: Kulfi, a traditional Indian ice cream flavored with pistachio or mango; Shahi Tukda, bread pudding with gold rum-soaked raisins, toasted cashews and bourbon saffron sauce; or a coconut sorbet.
